Game Show Decorating–What Do These Have in Common?

Flipping the pages of People I was struck by a picture of John Mayer. Not in the way you think. I liked his outfit. It was the coolest. For a minute I thought “Can I wear that?” I came up a blank as to where I would wear it–unless it is in the midst of Montana, during a Renaissance Festival, while herding cattle, just before I did a rain dance.
I’m not making fun. I REALLY like the look, so much that I decided to translate it into my 8 year old’s room. So here’s the rub. I’m not spending a bunch of money to make this happen. I’m also not spending a lot of time to make this happen. In a different time and place I would LOVE to really do this up. Velvets, denim, leather, the Byzantine Crosses, a little Americana, a little Western funk. Ralph Lauren is only wishing he came up with this idea first. So, perhaps, not to let Ralph beat me to the punch I will work on this behind the scenes to make this really really come to life. Stay tuned. In the meantime, I, over the weekend hauled things around in my house and did some tweaking.
Here’s a prelim:
I found these pillow covers at TJMaxx on clearance for $5 each! Blue velvet with red velvet piping–they retailed for $38 each! I took some pillows I’m not using and stuffed them inside.
I found a blue body billow red tagged at Target for $5.
From my house I’m using a blue bedskirt, blue comforter, blue roman shades, and a dresser with knobs that had been custom painted for a medieval theme in a previous house. I am repurposing a rustic wood tool box and sacrificing my beloved bulletin board (see the About Me page My Style.)
So there’s the mish mash of what I have so far. The roman shades are not hung, just balanced. The light blue comforter is not working but has potential. I love the white knobs with the red Byzantine Cross but the rest of the knobs, not so much. Not sure on the dresser color–it’s grey/blue. It’s a versatile color in my house (we will be moving a lot so everything has to be versatile) but the light blue seems a little “babyish” in this room. I need some denim, and that has been a job. Whatever I find looks like Jerry Seinfeld’s couch from the 90’s. In other words, no. And I NEED some trim similar to what is on his jacket. I’ve been tearing up the internet looking. In the meantime I will be taking this
with me wherever I go. You never know what I will find–Really large jeans from the thrift store that I can resew into a hip duvet cover? Religious Holy store of robes and whatnots? Perhaps the stylist from this record album Paradise Valley will see this post and call me?
Have any pictures you want to translate decorate?
I have a dream and that dream is to have a teeny tiny cottage.
It would look like this.

I’m a house tweaker. That is really exactly what I do. I prefer it vs starting from scratch. Handy dandy Google defines tweaking as: Improve (a mechanism or system) by making fine adjustments to it.
I kind of want to make up a song about me. “I’m a house tweakerrrr…yeah yeah…I’m a house tweaker”. Anywho.
I did some tweaking to my own house.
Fireplace felt bare. (Click here to see before.) And I was intrigued by how Starbucks always makes their chalkboard signs look so nice…turns out they use chalkboard markers. So I went to handy dandy Michaels’s and bought some.
I went to the Virginia International Tattoo yesterday with my 1st grader’s school. It is a 900 plus cast of bagpipers, drummers, military bands, dancers, singers, drill teams, color guards and other performers from all over the world (ever see a jeep put together in 60 seconds flat?). The theme for this year’s Tattoo is, and by the by, my 7 year old wanted to know from the teacher if everyone there would have tattoos… “tattoo” in this sense means (military musical display), anyway—back to the story, the theme this year is “Homecoming”. As a military spouse who has watched her husband deploy several times, the finale did a good job of making me cry.
However, when I wasn’t crying, or taking someone to the bathroom, or telling various children that I did not have food or candy or money to buy food or candy….when that wasn’t going on I was completely obsessed with the colors and patterns of the bagpipers. This happens to me all the time. I go to see a movie, play, whatever, and I become completely distracted by the sets, location, cinematography, or in this case kilts and knee socks.
So when I saw this…
I was taken away to Scotland. And when I saw this…
I started thinking about having my own castle on the moors…(what is a moor?)
And naturally it would be my country estate and Ralph would decorate it as I would be too busy…well, doing nothing.
Ralph, above, doing nothing, like me, in my country estate castle on the moors, in Scotland.
Gorgeous, isn’t it?
I didn’t know how much I liked tartan plaids til I started looking at all these interiors, mainly by Ralph Lauren and also, Scot Meacham Wood, of SMW Designs. Check out his blog called The Adventures of Tartanscot if you liked what you saw here…his work is amazing.
All this talk about country homes is making me yearn for a little Downton Abbey…wait for it in an upcoming post.

A few weeks ago, I started my Cottage Love series…So today for Inspired Style–Cottage Love (cue dwarves singing, harps, flutes, birds etc…)
…it’s the cottage from the Bewitched remake.
Today seemed like a good day to pretend to live in magical cottage world. I don’t know what the weather is like where you are but here it is a rainy, windy, pollen covered wet mess. We are maxed out with baseball, tee ball, end of school year activities, jobs, mulch beds and I would LOVE to just wiggle my nose and BAM!
So for today…here is my sunlit kitchen and patio.
I like the chandeliers…see the one in the garden?

Here’s my cute clean car and my manicured (and mulched) front yard. Like my picket fence??
I just like cats. And I like her hair. I also like the flowers. Do you think they read my 5 Minute Spring Decorating post?
A bonus is that Nora Ephron is directing my day. I like her directions. They always come out nice. Think Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, or Julie and Julia.
Just as I’m finishing up typing this the sun is coming out at MY house. Going to work on my own magic!
