I just went on a 27 hour “staycation” to Virginia Beach with a dear friend. We stayed 45 minutes from home in a condo on the beach…for 27 hours. It was actually less but we won’t nitpick. And it rained, but that was fine. We read books, had coffee, took a nap, looked at magazines, went out to eat, walked on the boardwalk, watched a movie and slept in. I get up 7 days a week at the same time for kids, jobs, church, baseball games and other random events so sleeping til 8:30 almost made me giddy. Another thing we did was went to a beach souvenir shop. We spent quite a bit of time in there because it was 1) very amusing 2) it was raining. I have a great picture I took in the store for tomorrow. (Wordless Wednesday click here.)
Anyway…this got me thinking about all the bits and pieces one picks up on a vacation. Most people come home and unpack and have this pile of “stuff” they picked up from the trip…the tangible memories. Maps, brochures, ticket stubs, tacky small whatever that makes you laugh when you see it but you really don’t know what to do with, and pictures. I am unable to scrapbook. It is not in my DNA make-up. I do not have the patience or the time. The end results is amazing but it is simply not a realistic endeavor for my life. And what do you do with the three-dimensional stuff anyway?
So out of laziness and out of compulsion for like things being together and out of a desire to remind my family of all of our fun trips I started doing this—I cull the pile, get one of my handy dandy vases (Walmart, Michaels, Garden Ridge) and pretty much shove it all in making sure the pretty stuff is on the outside.
Here is one of the jars/glass cannisters that I put together in 5 minutes from our recent trip to Quebec.

Snow from Quebec. Love this.

Voila!

Along the way I have discovered others that do this. Young House Love is one of my favorite blogs. They have a great post about doing this very thing that you can read here.

So here’s to remembering our travel memories, defining clutter, and making art out of the everyday. Joy in a Jar.

Everybody Loves Raymond on ABC

The Middle on ABC
I’m going to be brief (or I’m going to try.) Kids bring a lot of clutter to a house. We’ll define clutter as a confusing or disorderly state. Kids make houses disorderly. It is their job. This is directed at you, the parent of the “culprits”. It is a no win exhausting battle between “picked up for 5 minutes” and “complete and utter chaos”. I am Type A. I can take 2 days of things being disorderly and then I start to freak out a little. I have systems. I have mantras…like things must go together is my favorite. I have help. (I also have anti-help). I have training, if you will, to deal with these scenarios. AND I still fight the forces of good and evil.
I help a lot of people with their houses. If you are battling the clutter fight and want a calm uncluttered home…if you do not want your home to continue to look like the two pictures above then you must listen to me.
You will have visual crazy clutter no matter what because that is life, especially if you have kids. But please do not add to it by doing the following:
Open storage. It hurts me. Glass front cabinets are amazing if you have a complete matched set of monochromatic dishes arranged artfully. Mismatched mugs, shot glasses from around the world, wine glasses with writing on them (just stop it) equates to visual clutter. Open shelves with art supplies. No. Open anything. Just don’t buy it anymore. It’s too much. We are seeing too much. I don’t need to see all of your office supplies. I am going to stop here. Just remember. Open storage if you grapple with clutter issues is BAD.
Prime Real Estate. I’m not talking about property. I’m talking about the kitchen cabinet next to your sink. Or the middle of your pantry. Or the coat closet directly opposite the door you use everyday. Why do you have your Christmas dishes next to your sink thus half of your glasses and mugs are on the counter or horror upon horrors on a mug tree? (Again visual clutter–and only pertains if you have clutter issues). Why is the middle of the pantry loaded with Costco paper products and the top of your refrigerator is full of cereal boxes? And please, I know I sound upset, but I am passionate about this subject….Why is the vacuum and game collection in the coat closet and all of the coats and shoes are lining the hallway? I promise I don’t yell at people or judge. I just want you to live peacefully. I do. And it is so hard when you can’t find your left shoe.
Sometimes to get to use your Prime Real Estate–you have to purge.
And lastly just to keep it simple. Just for now. Just until you get to a happy place with the clutter. Remember these decorating rules:
If it smaller than a football don’t display it.
Tone down the patterns and go simple with colors. Monochromatic can be a good thing. For now.
Set “zones” for your areas. Pick ONE spot for displaying pictures–ie the piano, the dining room buffet. Pick a spot for books and keep them together. Work-out equipment–ONE place. Kids crafts–find a place that is realistic for the family and stick with it. One place, one spot, one category. Homework area. Use bins that are NOT transparent. Use deep baskets. Use cabinets. Label the cabinets so everyone knows. Be realistic about how much room you need and only have ONE step involved in putting anything away. Ie…Open door and put on shelf. (sort of two steps but you get the point).
I could go on and on and on and on. But I’ll stop here lest I overwhelm you.
Purge it. Like things together. Concealed storage. Be realistic. Keep it simple with colors and patterns. Small is bad. Big is better. (Less visual clutter)
Know that if you have kids or that this is an area where you are challenged that you can only eat an elephant one piece at a time. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Love to you all. Happy Sunday everyone.

I went to the Virginia International Tattoo yesterday with my 1st grader’s school. It is a 900 plus cast of bagpipers, drummers, military bands, dancers, singers, drill teams, color guards and other performers from all over the world (ever see a jeep put together in 60 seconds flat?). The theme for this year’s Tattoo is, and by the by, my 7 year old wanted to know from the teacher if everyone there would have tattoos… “tattoo” in this sense means (military musical display), anyway—back to the story, the theme this year is “Homecoming”. As a military spouse who has watched her husband deploy several times, the finale did a good job of making me cry.
However, when I wasn’t crying, or taking someone to the bathroom, or telling various children that I did not have food or candy or money to buy food or candy….when that wasn’t going on I was completely obsessed with the colors and patterns of the bagpipers. This happens to me all the time. I go to see a movie, play, whatever, and I become completely distracted by the sets, location, cinematography, or in this case kilts and knee socks.
So when I saw this…

I was taken away to Scotland. And when I saw this…

I started thinking about having my own castle on the moors…(what is a moor?)

And naturally it would be my country estate and Ralph would decorate it as I would be too busy…well, doing nothing.

Ralph, above, doing nothing, like me, in my country estate castle on the moors, in Scotland.

I didn’t know how much I liked tartan plaids til I started looking at all these interiors, mainly by Ralph Lauren and also, Scot Meacham Wood, of SMW Designs. Check out his blog called The Adventures of Tartanscot if you liked what you saw here…his work is amazing.
All this talk about country homes is making me yearn for a little Downton Abbey…wait for it in an upcoming post.

A few weeks ago, I started my Cottage Love series…So today for Inspired Style–Cottage Love (cue dwarves singing, harps, flutes, birds etc…)

…it’s the cottage from the Bewitched remake.
Today seemed like a good day to pretend to live in magical cottage world. I don’t know what the weather is like where you are but here it is a rainy, windy, pollen covered wet mess. We are maxed out with baseball, tee ball, end of school year activities, jobs, mulch beds and I would LOVE to just wiggle my nose and BAM!

So for today…here is my sunlit kitchen and patio.

I just like cats. And I like her hair. I also like the flowers. Do you think they read my 5 Minute Spring Decorating post?

A bonus is that Nora Ephron is directing my day. I like her directions. They always come out nice. Think Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, or Julie and Julia.

Just as I’m finishing up typing this the sun is coming out at MY house. Going to work on my own magic!
